Using evolutionary biology techniques to study language development

What happens if you study words like you study the life history of a species? This article talks about a technique of analyzing language that uses the same computational methods as for phylogeny– studying how species relate to their genetics. It looks at commonly-used words within languages, and tries to date when certain languages diverged from one another. study estimated that the Indian and European language families diverged from each other from 7,800 to 9,800 years ago– around 2000 years earlier than previously thought by linguists. If you like either evolutionary biology or languages or both, you will find this article super interesting! Click here or on the title of this post to check it out.
