This Economist article studies the state of Arabic language in Israel. The history is very interesting Hebrew is the main language in Israel, not because when it was founded it was the main language, but because the Zionist movement. When Israel was being founded one of the main concerns of the founders was promoting a togetherness of all Jewish people. It was decided the best way to do this was to make Hebrew the main and mandatory language in Israel. Until 2002 you couldn’t even find Arabic in official settings despite being the first language of the fifth of the population. The article further explores the various tensions in Israel between the Arabs and Jewish citizens of Israel, but offers some hope at the end. Overall, this was a very interesting article that explored the cultural conflicts of language in Israel.
