Language Lab Assistant Job Description
The Language Lab Assistant is expected to accomplish the following tasks while on duty at the Circulation Desk:
- Patron record keeping: The Language Lab Assistant is to maintain an accurate tally of the patrons using the equipment in the lab and surrounding spaces. This is accomplished through a web-based data base at the desk. Information needs to be tallied every half an hour on the quarter hour (e.g. 1:15, 1:45, 2:15, 2:45…). In addition, Language Lab Assistants must comment upon the applications being used by patrons in the space on the form that is provided.
- Computer and equipment support: the Language Lab Assistant is to provide computer and AV equipment support in the lab. To this end, Language Lab Assistants are required to attend training sessions at the beginning of each semester by the Language Lab Director and the Educational Technology Specialist.
- Checking out of materials and re-shelving of materials: using the OBIS system, Language Lab Assistants will check out materials to patrons for use in the lab, and then re-shelve these materials upon their return.
- Faculty projects: Assigned by the Language Lab Director or the Educational Technology Specialist, Language Lab Assistants will be assigned to provide support to faculty technology projects. This can include such things as recording SCOLA broadcasts, digitizing audio and video materials for online use, scanning materials for editing or OCR (optical character recognition), webpage creation, etc. These projects will be an opportunity to learn new skills and previous knowledge of the programs and tools are not expected.
- Scheduling: The Language Lab Assistants manage the schedule of A/V equipment, the language lab computers for classroom use, the use of the Faculty Development Workstations, and the use of the Smart Classrooms in Peters Hall.
