babel

i kind of thought the medicine lady’s speech not being subtitled gave her acting more importance. because we didnt know what she was saying, we really had to pay attention to her actions and her face to follow along.

importance of a name

i thought it was interesting that in pan’s labyrinth, el capitan was shot down when he asked mercedes to name the boy after him. on the other hand, in children of men, kee tells clive owens that she’s gonna name the baby after him. the good guy gets to have his legacy passed on through a young child.

i thought the ending was a bit lengthy. some of the shots of the labyrinth annoyed me and i thought they went on for too long.

children of men

i was confused as to how the rebel group wanted to use the baby for the refugee’s cause. children of men just left a lot of unanswered questions for me.

animals

I think Cuaron included animals in Children of Men to show that animals could survive amongst themselves, while humans, although smarter, were acting savagely towards each other.

Even though everyone seemed to enjoy the relationship between Ofelia and Mercedes, I thought it was weird. It just seemed like they got too close too soon. It works for the story, but I just found it unrealistic.

babel

babel’s japanese story is not necessary to the plot, but it adds to theme of communication that Inarritu is trying to display. Both Chieko and her dad are grieving the loss of the mother in separate and silent ways which ends up messing up Chieko’s self-esteem. In the end, Chieko tries to sleep with a cop which produces a realization from the father that his daughter has issues he cannot ignore. For communication to begin between these two, some strange event has to occur. This is the same thing with Brad Pitt and Kate Blanchett. The shooting allowed them to communicate better.

Even with people that speak the same language, communication was not effective. The other tourists on the bus in Morrocco, although they spoke English, were not effective in devising a plan where everyones needs were met. There was a lot of yelling and fighting, but in the end, Brad Pitt got left behind.

the girl in great expectations

cuando el nino visita a la nina en great expectations, la nina se desaparece muchas veces, pero cuando la llaman sale de ningun lado. parece algo de la imagination en vez de una nina verdadera (en las escenas en el empezar).

When jarocho was walking/interacting with his dogs, the camera shots always seemed to be low. This was a way to make jarocho seem distant and menacing because he towered over the dogs. On the other hand, Octavio always came down to the dogs level when interacting with him.
