Programa de estudios

Primero: un poco de explicación de cómo funcionará esta clase: (en inglés)

The students’ objectives should be:

–to gain a greater understanding of the Spanish-speaking world through face–to-face and online conversations about the history, culture, politics, music, films of these countries

— to develop reading, writing and listening skills, as well as effective strategies for oral communication in a variety of contexts (face-to-face, blogs, Second Life, skype, etc)

– to identify realistic (personal) goals in the language and to achieve them by the first week of May, chronicling progress via one’s personal blogs/portfolios

How HISP 205 will help you achieve these objectives:

1) Country or region-specific class discussions: current events, news feeds, films, music. Will try to coordinate the selection of the countries with the interests, travel plans of the class. Conversations will happen both in class as well as on the class blog.

2) Personal goals in the language: I will ask each student to identify 2 or 3 things you wish you could do in the language but cannot currently do, and I will work with you to map out a plan to work towards these. Students will blog about their progress.

What I expect from you:

•Class participation: Simply put, this is a conversation class: the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. Your progress is in your hands.

• Frequent informal self-assessments will be conducted in class (one minute essays) that will be collected and reviewed in weekly face-to-face meetings (below).

•10 minute check-in meetings with me once a week: we will review your progress to date, provide feedback, establish weekly, long term goals

• Organize and lead class conversations (either alone or with one other person): this includes (but is not limited to) creating pre-class supplemental materials /conversation questions (on the blog), and guiding class discussions both in class and attending to questions that may occur on the blog

• Personal Learning Portfolio (to be chronicled on your personal blog): identify 2-3 personal goals by 2/27 and provide evidence of working towards these by 5/1. Your portfolio must include evidence of thoughtful interactions with native speakers and use of at least one of the technologies we have explored in class. You will expected to write at least two reflective posts written on the blog about the process per week. You are also expected to read your classmates’ blogs at least 2 X a week, offer support, ask questions, and help them towards their goals.

•Final oral exam (20-30 minutes) and one page written defense of final grade: both interview and essay will be a summary of personal objectives, learning outcomes, and your desired portfolio grade.

What you can expect from me:

• That I will ask for thoughtful and constructive feedback on a regular basis. .

• Regular feedback on your work.

• I work in technology on a daily basis. It makes sense to me (most of the time). However, I understand that it can be confusing and cumbersome to others . My job is make it accessible and comprehensible to you. I will not grade you on your tech skills, but I do expect that you will try out the tools and explore the connections they provide. I will provide drop in sessions for tech explorations and explanations outside of class.

• If you push yourself, amazing things can happen in this class. I am here to nudge you and offer feedback, support, corrections, advice. Please tell me how I can be helpful to you.
