Visually, this movie was freakin’ awesome. The camera work was unique and sophisticated, and helped inform the narrative through image composition and editing technique. The director was clearly very concerned with how the film looked – the mise-en-scene. The majority of the colors in the movie seemed to fall within the same general tonal range, allowing the director to easily accent details of his choosing. This gave the film a rather ominous tone. The plot, as we have read in various reviews, is full of allusions to the story of christ. The director reflects this theme very strongly in his images.
this movie was cool.

in many ways, this movie both followed and deviated from the typical structure of a nineties Russian film. For example, the plot is very narrow, following the actions of really just three characters. Not to mention it also takes place in a time of war. However, this film also shows an emergence out of the framework of nineties movies. Made in 2002, the nineties recently over, Cuckoo shows us a settlingly optomistic ending that would have been unheard of just 3 years prior.

To start with the positive – I thought this movie was one of the first we’ve seen that appeared to be a piece of art rather than just a narrative. It was visually interesting, unlike the other films we’ve seen from the nineties which seemed to follow very strict traditional editing guidelines. hooray for breaking boundaries.
to be honest, though, I didn’t really get it. I couldn’t really tell what point the director was trying to make – what conclusion he was trying to come to. It was clearly a movie about the codependence of two women, but other than that I wasnt able to decipher any explanations for why I was seeing what I was seeing. I thought this movie was more abstract than a simple, commercial film should have been.
