After listening to the call to prayer and reading the articles, I approached the ringtone with hesitancy. As the call started, I tried to figure out how the piece could be used in a non-sacreligious manner. I thought perhaps if someone were used to hearing the call to prayer and were visiting an area without it, they could use their cell phone as a means of delivering the reminder to pray five times a day. The deep bass in the background was a little off-putting, and when the piano started in, I laughed loud enough to probably wake the rest of Firelands. I guess it just didn’t make sense — after reading the articles mentioning the clear divide between music and religious recitation, I hear this recitation turned into music.
