Folk Orchestras

I decided to use the Arrangement of folk instruments as the focal point for my post.  I really enjoyed this music as it was played at a very fast paced and seemed to give off a fun vibe.  I would think this kind of music would be played at festivals or concerts as there could be set dances that are done to certain songs.  It could also be used to have set dances that can be a group activity.  There also seemed to be a great deal of interlocking taking place as it was quite hard to follow at points.  Harmony was also another technique that was a major part of this music.  Overall, I really enjoyed the fast paced, interlocking, harmonic beat that was given off by this type of music.

Nehamusasa

I rather enjoyed Nehamusasa.  It was very different than a lot of the music we have heard.  There was a constant beat with some sort of maraca? instrument being played in the background, which led me to believe that it was played at various social occassions such as dances or festivals.  I am not familiar at all with the language spoken by theses people, but it didn’t seem like there were any lyrics, but there were vocals.  I also noticed some sort of string instrument being played towards the end of the song.  Overall, I rather enjoyed this music for most of the duration, but it got a little repetitive towards the end which made it tougher to stay tuned in.

Soft and Loud Style Pieces

There were many differences between these two styles.  The soft style piece, Ladrang Wilujeng, had lyrics and seemed to be non rhythmic.  Because it seemed to lack a rhythm, I didn’t really enjoy it nearly as much as the loud style piece, Bubaran Kembang Pacar.  This piece was very rhythmic and melodic and did not have lyrics.  It was very soothing as the beat started with just one gong playing one note and began to have another and another join.  The tempo often changed speed from slow to fast to slow, which was constant throughout both styles.  Another difference was the pitch.  The soft style piece seemed to be very high pitched with some sort of string instrument sound while the loud style piece was very heavy.

Listening Journal #3

These two pieces seemed quite similar to me. They both started out with just one instrument for a very short period of time, then are accompanied by another. The instruments which are played are different in each song as they have different tones in the beats produced. They also have fairly similar beats and there are no lyrics in either piece. They bring about the same type of feeling or emotion when listened to. The beat is energetic and seems like it is music that makes you want to move around to as it has a repeated melody.

Both of these pieces are group activities that seem to maybe be played at some kind of gathering or festival as it has a repeated melody throughout. Because there is a repeated melody it seems like many more people could enjoy it as it is played over a longer period of time for many people to enjoy or take part of at some kind of larger social event.
