Somehow, after 15 years, Chile has won.
Yesterday was the plebiscite. Yesterday was our chance to say “NO” to 9 more years of Pinochet. And we did.
Yesterday, more than half of those who voted chose “NO.” They chose happiness over fear, and a way to the future over remaining in a past full of terror.
It was a long, hard process to reach this moment. We canvassed the streets and registered thousands of voters throughout ConcepciĆ³n and we prayed – and finally, finally, we have triumphed.
I can only imagine how General Pinochet felt when he finally had to concede his loss.
But, there is little time to gloat. We must instead remain vigilant, and continue campaigning for a candidate to win the upcoming presidential election.
We may take some time to celebrate, but Chile’s future continues to hang in the balance, and will do so until we can secure a victory for a candidate who will truly represent the will of the people.
We have much to do, but at least for now, we have won.

It felt so good, didn’t it, to see the “No” win. While I always knew we had the votes, I was never sure that Pinocho would let this happen. As a matter of fact, I’m still not sure. I keep thinking that he’ll hide something up his sleeve and pull back this victory at the last moment. Maybe that’s what comes after 15 years of dictatorship, never really trusting one’s happiness! Where were you when you heard the news?
