Introducing Cristóbal – October 26th, 1970

My name is Cristóbal Herrera Muñoz.
I was born in Concepción on the 16th of September, 1940.
I am a coal miner, like my father was.
My mother is a waitress, and has been for most of her life and all of mine.
I have one young brother, Hector, who is a student.
I am unmarried.

After the events of yesterday, I have decided to create a record of recents events.

Yesterday, October 25th, General René Schneider was killed.
He too was born in Concepción.
I am not sure exactly what happened to him, or why it happened, but it seems like the United States was involved. They are unhappy with the other recent event that I feel I must mention: the election of Salvador Allende Gossens of the U.P. (Unidad Popular).
He is, as they are saying, the first elected Socialist, and promises to do much for workers like myself.
Now is a time of much uncertainty, but also of much hope.
It is for these reasons that I decided I must record what happens from now on, so that I can perhaps leave some memory of this history for my children, if I ever have any, or for the children of Hector.

Now I must go, but I will return to write more soon.

Hola, Cristóbal – it’s a pleasure to meet you and thank you for letting me read your record of events. I’m here in Santiago, so I’m always eager to hear what’s happening other places. Things are confused here after General Schneider’s death was reported, but it looks like Congress will confirm Allende as President. At least, we much hope that Chileans in authority will do what they always have and follow the Constitution. I look forward to hearing from you in the future.
