Introducing Alita

8 October 1970

¡Hola! I am so excited to be writing in this diary that my mami gave me for my 10th birthday because 10 is a big number. My new diary is bright red with “Ultra Secreto” written in big gold letters on the cover. It even came with a lock on the side so only I can open it because I have the key and what I have to say is for my eyes only. My mami says I should introduce my self and record my life in my diary so here I go:

My name is Alita Koch Cortés and (like I told you) I am 10 years old. I live with my mami and papi and little brother Fernando who is 7. We live above my papi’s bookshop in our town Punta Arenas in Chile. Our apartment and shop always smell like the dusty paper of old books. I like lying on the floor of the shop and looking up at the mountains of books in strange languages rising above me. Since Papi is from Germany, on the other side of the big pond like he says, we have books in German and English and French and Spanish (of course). I love learning about the world on the other side of the pond from my papi’s books before I fall asleep. He likes to read the bible with me but Mami will get mad because she doesn’t want me to be a Protestant like Papi. Mami is Catholic and likes it when we go to Catholic Church. I don’t like dressing up in dresses so it doesn’t matter which church it is as long as I can wear my comfy clothes. Unfortunately, I do have church tomorrow morning, so I must get to bed so I can be up bright and early and get dressed up (I never win that fight). Goodnight!

Hola, Alita. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance and thank you for letting me in on your “Ultra Secret” diary! I’m up here in Santiago – Punta Arenas seems like another world, so far south. Do you ever see polar bears wandering on your streets? Or is that the North Pole, I just get confused some time. Anyway, keep in touch and I look forward to reading more about what you’re doing.
