August 1970

Dear Diary, this will be the first entry I put in you, hopefully of many to come. I believe an introduction is in order. My name is Flora, Miranda Rojas. I am 25 years old. I am living in Maule, a small, pinprick of a town, where my parents are peasants and I help them. There is nothing keeping me here, except maybe that there is nothing pushing me to leave either.

I have decided to begin keeping a record of the events of my life, because I feel like something is beginning to move in Chile. I believe it comes from the elections, though I have not kept up with them. My parents neither, though they have talked about it a few times. My father was excited the last time, because he believed the Christian Democrats would give us land, but we are still waiting and now he does not care. My mother says she thinks the UP will be different. I think I will vote for them.
