Pinochet is finally no more! It has be reported that Pinochet has died today. He has supposedly died from complications from a heart attack. At my age of 61, I wondered whether justice would get him first or death. Just reflecting back from protests, to strikes, and to all the fear, it is safe to say that this dirty era has finally ended. Hopefully, there will be no more disappeared, no more mothers looking for their children, no more military intervention in the realm of politics. In some senses I do feel this past the us Chileans share is partly our fault. If we could have done more or organize more protests or strikes maybe it would have turned out differently. I do not know… Maybe that is just my survivor’s remorse. I have lost many close friends in this era. I think those close friends that I have lost would be happy that it is all finally over. Although, I do think it would have been better if justice had played its course, but there were too many loopholes that Pinochet found. From claiming mild dementia, to asserting that he was of weak health, he always escaped the blind hand of justice. Luckily, death cannot be escaped, or he would still be around.
But now, it is my job to tell my children and grandchildren what their Chilean heritage consists of. And, even more importantly, to remember those who have disappeared and honor them by continuing to look for the children that may still be alive just like in Argentina.
I am hoping that Chile will remember the past and have a bright future.
